Ryan and I read this aloud to each other. It was a non-fiction summer reading book for 8th graders. It was very entertaining. It is sprinkled with profanity, but once you understand what the author goes through physically and mentally, it is justified. He gets dragged behind his sled for long distances and he is nearly killed by a moose. At one point he has fallen down this steep mountain pass, separated from the dog team into the snow. He was revived by another musher holding his team. He suffers through bitter cold at 60 degrees below zero, he and his entire dog team nearly fall into the Bering Sea as they cross the sea ice.
Despite his difficulties, he becomes one with his dogs and falls in love with the whole Iditarod experience. What a great read.
