I have been skipping through the book and checking out some of the tips that are based on research. The book includes topics like when is the best time to exercise, how many steps should we really be shooting for on a daily basis, what to eat pre and post workout and the best time to stretch. What is the best type of protein supplement? How much water should we drink? All of these questions are answered with pages and pages of references to studies and reports.
I love the eight eating rules and I am doing my best to apply them every day! I include protein with every meal. I am including complex carbohydrates like whole grains, beans and fruits. Most importantly, I am forgetting about fad diets. That’s right, I am not focusing on staying low carb anymore. I am more calorie-conscious, enjoying food and my diet is definitely more balanced.
I did the first strength training workout today. I started out with five minutes of easy warm-ups to get the blood flowing. I chose the beginner series of exercises. I worked up quite a sweat doing push-ups, squats, curl-ups and weight lifting. The routine does take about 15 minutes. This is followed by a few minutes of stretching. This is definitely doable. I appreciate how quickly I can get it done. I even followed up with 15 minutes of rowing on our rowing machine. Day 2 is high intensity intervals. I will use the treadmill. I have to do 15 seconds at an intensity of 8 on a scale of 1-10, followed by 45 seconds at an intensity of 5. Ten times. The rest of the six day routine consists of cardio, strength, high intensity interval plyometrics, with my choice of workout on day six with a rest day on day 7.
I know interval training is effective, but it isn’t my favorite! I hope I can learn to like it. My problem is that I only work-out 2 days a week/ I run/walk five miles on the treadmill. I am realizing at my age, I need to switch things up and exercise on a daily basis. It’s time to get smarter about working out and I think this is just the book to help me.
