I was concerned when I posted this picture that people might think I was sharing a recipe for actual dog biscuits. These do resemble those raw hide type bones a little bit. But no. These are indeed a kids’ snack soft pretzel bones – soft pretzels for human consumption – and young humans in particular!
Ryan and I made these for a very special occasion. His friend Claire invited him over to see the Puppy Bowl! What is the Puppy Bowl, you ask? The Puppy Bowl is an annual television program on Animal Planet that mimics an American football bowl game similar to the Super Bowl, using puppies. Shown each year on Super Bowl Sunday, the show consists of footage of a batch of puppies at play inside a model stadium, with commentary on their actions. While the adults were gearing up for the Super Bowl, these kids were gearing up for the Puppy Bowl! So. Darn. Cute.
Well, Ryan couldn’t show up to such an occasion empty-handed. That’s when I thought of pretzels shaped like dog-bones. Bingo.
These are the perfect treat for the Puppy Bowl. Heck, they would be a hit at Halloween or maybe a fun way to celebrate that new addition to the family! Arf! Arf!
So, I did what any mom would do. I started searching the Internet for recipes. Then I remembered. I already posted a recipe that I could use. It’s this one – Homemade Soft Pretzels. It was only a year ago that I posted that too!
To make these, follow that recipe. Instead of rolling out the dough and forming into pretzel shapes, you roll out the pieces of dough and tie knots in the ends. Believe me, they don’t have to be perfect – just look at ours!
Just like that recipe, you boil them for 30 seconds in a pot of baking soda and water and they come out like this.
The alkali solution of baking soda and boiling water causes the crust to brown so deeply. Just add a little pretzel salt (I used kosher salt.) and coat with a beaten egg yolk/water mixture. Bake at 450 degrees for 12-14 minutes until golden brown. Check out the complete recipe here.
I can tell you the soft pretzel bones were a huge hit. These kids were in full Puppy Bowl mode as they munched and cheered on their favorites.
After the Puppy Bowl, they switched to Super Bowl mode and made these cute referees out of Nutter Butter cookies. You can never have too many snacks!
