THE PERFECT PORTION COOKBOOK is the first of its kind, to be released in February 2016, filled with 150 delicious comfort food classics. And they are recipes that you can eat “guilt free,” because each recipe has been crafted in multiples of 100 calories, so you can choose the perfect portion that is right for you.
The 100 calorie counting system was inspired by Happy Days star and entrepreneur Anson Williams. He co-wrote the cookbook along with Natick, MA resident and nutritionist Mona Dolgov and New York Times best-selling cookbook author Bob Warden.
This cookbook is a go-to eating guide with recipes, meal plan tools, tips for 100 calorie smart snacks and a list of everyday exercises that are essential for a healthy lifestyle. One Moms Own Words reader will win a copy of The Perfect Portion Cookbook!
The Perfect Portion Cookbook Review
I admit that when I first saw this cookbook, I thought it was just another diet gimmick with low-calorie (aka-boring and tasteless!) recipes. However, the more recipes that I tried, the more impressed I was with this cookbook.
I made the homemade granola recipe and thought it was delicious. I typically don’t make my own granola because I’m kinda lazy, and besides, I figured it has too many calories. Boy was I wrong. The homemade granola recipe was sweet, crunchy and easy – just 8 ingredients! Three packed tablespoons is 100 calories. Here’s was 100 calories looks like.
I’ve already had this twice! Once here on top of a cooked apple. (It tastes just like apple crisp!)
and here I’ve had it on top of my yogurt. This is a 200 calorie snack. I love having the sweet crunch of granola with my creamy Greek yogurt. What a treat! I would absolutely make this again.
Next, I tried the Southwestern Skillet Scramble for breakfast. I love that this recipe has lots of healthy veggies, protein-packed eggs, chicken sausage and just enough Pepper Jack cheese to satisfy without going overboard in calories.
The last recipe that I tried (for now!) is Mona’s Southwestern Chili. This recipe contains mostly staples that I already had in my pantry. The secret ingredient is freshly chopped basil. It gave the chili a very nice flavor. We thought it was hearty and delicious.
There is so much to love about this cookbook. There are full page, gorgeous photos of each recipe. The recipes are easy and delicious. Sticking to the correct portions when counting calories could not be easier. There are so many extras as well, like directions on making a meal plan, sample menus and recommended calorie intake as well as ways to burn off 100 calories. I look forward to trying more recipes!
The Author’s Goals for this Cookbook
To be able for you to eat the foods you love, without feeling compromised! We had the following in mind as we developed each recipe:
- Create great tasting recipes for 150 American favorite foods, each easily divisible into 100-calorie portions.
- Pay attention to portion sizes, making sure not to skimp, but rather enhance portions through healthful food swaps.
- Make realistic recommendations for portion sizes, adjustable by meal. Breakfast or dinner might be a 300-, 400- or 500-calorie portion, depending on your eating preferences.
- Provide a guide that will help you determine best food choices.
- Make WOW indulgent recipes, such as decadent desserts, in the 100- or 200-calorie range, so that you could satisfy your sweet tooth in a guilt-free way!
Now you can “have your cake and eat it too”. . .. literally! We will be posting new recipes every week, and in February you will be able to get the entire book. May these recipes offer you the love and memories you have shared with family and friends, and make you feel good inside and out! Bon appétit!
