Balanced Meals and Snacks
Let’s face it, it’s hard to maintain balanced meals and snacks when there are so many temping choices like cakes, cookies, chips, candies, sodas and extra fatty foods. We’ve got the protein and the grains covered. However, I make extra efforts to balance that out with fruits and vegetables. Here are some tips that we use in this family for balanced meals and snacks.
Shop the outer isles at the grocery store. Every week, I spend most of my time in the outer aisles at the grocery store for dairy, deli and meat and produce. The only item from the balanced plate (shown above) that is found within the middle isles of my grocery store is the grains.
Fill a bowl with fresh fruit and keep it on your counter. Here’s our fruit bowl. I keep this right on the counter. We all see it and reach for some healthy fruit like bananas, cuties and apples during our day.
Bring fresh fruit to a party! I am in charge of the fruit salad. It’s true! Whatever the get together, a birthday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter I always bring the fruit salad. Instead of only noshing on chips and dips, we enjoy a bowl of fresh fruit as an appetizer or a dessert. My kids see me bringing something healthy and hopefully that will stick with them as they get older.
Stock the refrigerator or freezer with your families’ favorite fruits and veggies. I fill my grocery cart with fruits and veggies that my kids will eat. I always have fresh salad fixings on hand – romaine lettuce, baby kale, celery, carrots, red and sweet onions and peppers. My kids may not like many cooked vegetables, but I can always get them to eat a salad with their meal at night.
Moderation is key. Going to McDonald’s is a treat and we go once or twice every month. The boys are still growing and are active in sports. They still love those McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries! During the summer months, Grant will take the boys running at the track and then they hit McDonald’s for breakfast. Being physically active helps with weight maintenance.
My metabolism is much slower than theirs and I am certainly done growing. When we all go to McDonald’s, I like to make healthier choices for myself. For years now, whenever I take the kids to McDonald’s, I always get the Southwest Salad or the Bacon Ranch Salad with grilled chicken. Did you know that McDonald’s new (and improved) salad mix is made from crisp chopped romaine, baby spinach and baby kale? Also, McDonald’s grilled chicken is so moist, delicious and flavorful that I don’t even use a salad dressing.
I make a simple crock pot pasta sauce with chicken sausage. I am a big fan of sausage, but can do without the extra calories and fat in regular sausage. So, naturally, I was excited to try McDonald’s new chicken sausage on a breakfast sandwich, because for me, it’s another healthier/lower fat option available at McDonald’s. This helps me to stay on track while treating the kids to their McDonald’s favorites.
Introducing McDonald’s Chicken Sausage!
The chicken sausage is a juicy breakfast option flavored with rosemary and additional spices. It contains 5 grams of fat and only 80 calories and is available as a substitute protein on any McDonald’s breakfast sandwich or platter!
I took the family to McDonald’s before James’ basketball game and I had a chance to try the new chicken sausage. I had the Egg White Delight with chicken sausage.
