Well, what can I say? I am hooked on this book and I am hooked on this author. I don’t typically read non-fiction, but I am starting to get into the murder mystery genre and with Julia Keller’s Bitter River, boy I picked an excellent read!
This story is about the murder of a pregnant 16 year old girl whose body is found in a car at the bottom of Bitter River located in Acker’s Gap, West Virginia. Bell Elkins is the prosecuting attorney that takes on this tough case. The victim – Lucinda Trimble is the same age as Bell’s daughter Carla. Life is complicated for Bell. Carla lives miles away with Bell’s ex husband. Bell is at odds with Sheriff Fogelsong, who is acting strangely. An old friend from Bell’s past also resurfaces, adding to the mystery. Bell is in a relationship with Clay, who is several years younger and tries to keep that on the down-low, until tragedy strikes unexpectedly.
The reader is in excellent hands with Julia Keller’s storytelling. The characters are people you know and where ever the characters go in the story, the author takes you there with her masterful story telling. Bell stands in the dirty Bitter River, trying to put together clues to solve this case, and I can picture it perfectly. Even with a small scene at Ike’s diner and I can smell the bacon and coffee.
It’s a fast moving story that I don’t want to put down. I loved this so much in fact, that I am looking forward to reading her latest novel in the Bell Elkins series – Last Ragged Breath. Although Bitter River stands on its own, it is actually part of a book series. Julia Keller’s first book is A Killing in the Hills. I plan on reading all the books in this series!
About Bitter River
In the next stunning novel from Pulitzer Prize-winning Julia Keller, following the popular A Killing in the Hills, a pregnant teenager is found murdered at the bottom of a river.
Phone calls before dawn are never good news. And when you’re the county’s prosecuting attorney, calls from the sheriff are rarely good news, either. So when Bell Elkins picks up the phone she already knows she won’t like what she’s about to hear, but she’s still not prepared for this: 16-year-old Lucinda Trimble’s body has been found at the bottom of Bitter River. And Lucinda didn’t drown–she was dead before her body ever hit the water.
With a case like that, Bell knows the coming weeks are going to be tough. But that’s not all Bell is coping with these days. Her daughter is now living with Bell’s ex-husband, hours away. Sheriff Nick Fogelsong, one of Bell’s closest friends, is behaving oddly. Furthermore, a face from her past has resurfaced for reasons Bell can’t quite figure. Searching for the truth, both behind Lucinda’s murder and behind her own complicated relationships, will lead Bell down a path that might put her very life at risk.
In Bitter River, Pulitzer Prize-winner Julia Keller once again weaves a compelling, haunting mystery against the stark beauty and extreme poverty of a small West Virginia mountain town.
