Last week or so, I saw a story on the news where a woman found a toddler locked in a hot car. She furiously banged at the window for several minutes trying to use a tire iron, a screw driver and finally it was a truck hitch that broke through the window. They thought that little girl was going to die as they frantically tried to break that window. After three minutes, which seemed like an eternity, they were able to get her out. When they did, she was drenched from head to toe in sweat. If she remained in the car just minutes longer, she would have eventually died.
Here is a link to that story. (Check out the cousins initial non-reaction to the child being saved. You will be OUTRAGED! That’s another blog post I suppose.)
Thanks to this Today Show Rossen’s report, now I know how to free a child from a hot car and I am sharing it with you!
- Grab your tire iron from the trunk of the car. Every car should have one in it to change a tire!
- Go to the window on the opposite side of the child, so that when the glass is broken, it doesn’t shatter onto the child.
- Break the glass in the lower left-hand corner of the window. This is the weakest point of the window. Avoid the center, which is the STRONGEST part of the window.
What is the tool used to break a car window? It’s a “window breaker.” It is specially made just for this reason. It also has a seat belt cutter. Buy this Seat Belt Cutter Window Breaker Emergency Escape Tool on Amazon.com for a mere $5.32 with free Prime shipping. I just ordered mine. Parents – buy yours and put it in your handbag or right in your car! It could save a life!
When using this tool, a light tap to the lower left corner with the sharp point easily breaks the window. See how it is done in the below Rossen Reports video. He puts himself in a hot car for the report. His temperature quickly rises to a dangerous 104 degrees and he had to get out.
