After twenty some odd years with a clean driving record, yours truly got pulled over for speeding over the school April vacation. Not only were my two kids in the car, I had my son’s friend with us too. We were heading to the movie theater.
So there I was tooling right along, in a residential area, music going, a truck pretty far ahead in front of me. All of sudden the cruiser on the opposite side of the road pulled a u turn and put the flashing lights on. I immediately pulled over and thought, he must be going after that truck ahead of me. Ahh….wait a minute. He just pulled up behind me. Uh oh. My son’s friend in the back said, “Oh, I’m wicked scared. This had never happened to me before.”
Okay, I can deal with this. I remained calm. Grabbed my license and registration in it’s nice little plastic protective cover. I was ready. When he approached the car, all he said was something like, “Any place in particular that you need to be driving so fast to today?”
All I said was one word. “No.” Then he took my l and r walked back to his cruiser, I still remained hopefully. Once he sees my clean record, surely he will just give me a warning and send me on my way. No. such. luck.
After about 10 minutes, he came back with a nice big fat ticket. $170 to be exact. I was clocked at 47 mph in a 30 mph zone.
While later chit chatting with my coworker that also got a ticket, it was recommended to me that I “fight it”. My sister in law also recommended that I “fight it”. She had one and fought it and it was reduced by something like $50. My coworker got out of hers completely.
So, I paid my $25 and now I have a court date- June 30th. I’ve never been to court before. When I told my Dad about it, he said, you should have just paid it. Now you are going to owe more than the original ticket. He is referring to the added $25 court fee and assuming that I will have to pay the ticket in full.
First off, I am very, very sorry. I did not realize I was going as fast as what he claims to have clocked me at. I travel a similar stretch two towns over where the speed limit is 45. Let my driving record show that I have been w/o incident for about 25 years. I feel as though in this case, a warning would have been justified. I have certainly slowed myself down and am now always aware of the speed limits. In fact, I have been passed twice now, on back roads, for heeding the speed limit – another dangerous situation. I also must admit, I have been a safe driver on my insurance for years. I love that safe driver discount. I don’t want my insurance to go up in premiums for the next four years over one incident.
So, now, I wait and see. June 30th will be here before I know it. What will the outcome be? Will the police officer show up? If he doesn’t, the ticket goes away. (How do like that?) Will he have someone stand in for him? (They do allow this.) Will the court officer take my driving record into account and throw this ticket out or will he or she tell me to pay up?
Have you ever been to court for a speeding ticket? I would love to hear about it. What do you think will happen in my case? Any advice?
