Did you know that March 4th is World Read Aloud Day?! Staples has partnered with Lit World to spread the good word! This special day calls global attention to reading aloud and sharing stories. According to LitWorld.org, World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people.
At Ryan’s school, they are celebrating Read Across America on March 6th in recognition of Dr. Seuss’ birthday which was March 2nd. So, the first week of March is all about the importance of reading by honoring the great Dr. Seuss, literacy, and reading aloud. To get this WRAD party started, we received crafting supplies and books from Staples. Staples is sponsoring a wonderful WRAD prize pack giveaway! One Moms Own Words reader will win Staples crafting supplies and age appropriate books for his or her child(ren). (See details below.)
In addition to some wonderful crafting supplies from Staples shown above, we received three books – Because of Winn -Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, and Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. Bud, Not Buddy received the John Newberry Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for Children. Bridge to Teribithia was one of my favorites that I read as a girl and a winner of the John Newberry Medal also. I look forward to reading both of these books with Ryan.
It was an easy choice as to what we would read aloud to each other first – Because of Winn Dixie. This is a book that Ryan’s teacher read to the class in 4th grade. He was excited that he received his own copy. I’m excited that he loved the story so much that he wants to read it again. I’ve never read the book, so I’m excited to read it too!
If you are not familiar with the story, it is about 10 year old India Opal Buloni who moves to Naomi, Florida with her father. She is sent to the grocery store to pick up some items for her Dad (including a box of mac and cheese!) and she ends up coming home with a dog! Winn-Dixie!
Ryan likes the book because he loves animals. He loves that Winn- Dixie is a super-friendly, playful dog. Throughout the story, Winn-Dixie teaches about unconditional love and gratitude.
Ryan also likes the part in the story where Opal goes into the pet store to buy a collar from a man named Otis. She doesn’t have enough money, and offers to help clean the store to raise enough money to buy the collar. Otis agrees. They become really good friends. Otis is a guitar player as well, and every time he plays his guitar, it soothes the animals in the store. He liked that in particular. As you might have read in previous posts, Ryan and I visit animals at the animal shelter. I think he really related to this part of the book because of his love of animals.
With our crafting supplies, Ryan drew Winn-Dixie and Opal. James contributed to the drawing with the box of mac and cheese, the “Because of” sign, pet cage and the hanging bottles. James read the book in 4th grade also! Ryan used construction paper for the frame, white construction paper for his drawing and Crayola Coloring pencils to color it. I found the Winn-Dixie logo online and printed it for his picture.
I am enjoying reading Because of Winn- Dixie to Ryan. It is a children’s story with themes of love and gratitude – among the key lessons in life in my opinion.
Read Out Loud Today
To celebrate Read Around the World Day, parents should read out loud to your children (or have them read out loud to you.) Follow it up with a fun activity! Have your kids draw something that represents their understanding of the story, or write a response to it about how it made them feel or what it made them think. You will be promoting literacy, comprehension and sharing a special moment with your kids.
