A new peer-to-peer car rental service called RelayRides asked several bloggers, including myself, to share some of our favorite hometown hidden gems. These places will be pinned on the Hometown Hidden Gems Pinterest Board. Follow Relayrides on Pinterest to check it out! I actually live in a rural area so there is really only one hidden gem (Mt. Watatic) that is actually in my town – Ashburnham. The other two hidden gems are both located in towns on either side of ours.
Mount Watatic Trail
Mount Watatic Trail is located in Ashburnham, MA, less than a five minute drive from our house. This trail is a 3 mile loop trail and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible from April until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail. On a clear day, you can see Boston off in the distance.
We love hiking Watatic as a family because the portion of the trail that we take is about a mile up and a mile down. In about an hour and 1/2 we can make the round trip with time to stop and take in the views. The trails are located on Rte. 119, Ashburnham, and there is a small parking lot at the base. When that is full, cars park along the road. This is a relatively easy hike, great for families with young kids.
The Grove Restaurant
The Grove Restaurant is the new restaurant that is part of the Woodbound Inn in Rindge, NH, which is the next town over from us. We visited this new restaurant over this past winter and Grant and I thought it was wonderful. The menu at the Woodbound Inn offers a nice selection of entrees on their dinner menu and they have a pub menu on the bar side of the restaurant as well. Here is a link to the Woodbound Inn Menu. Great Wolf Lodge
The GWL is a family resort/hotel that features the largest family of indoor waterparks in the US. Located right off of rte. 2, the newly opened GWL is just 15 minutes away from us in the city of Fitchburg, MA which is right next to us. We were invited for an overnight stay to coincide with the June 5th grand opening.
In addition to this amazing waterpark, there are so many activities like the ropes course and the interactive game called Magiquest, all in one location which it makes a trip to GWL New England convenient for families with kids of varying ages. For the full review, be sure to check out this post.
