CedarLane Tamale Review
A tamale is a Mexican dish of seasoned meat, or in this case, vegetarian ingredients, that are wrapped in cornmeal dough (maize) and steamed or baked in corn husks. Some are baked in green banana or plaintain also. These are either boiled, microwaved or steamed to heat and eat.
The CedarLane Tamales are a frozen food – they arrived frozen in their corn husks. To cook, these are wrapped in a damp paper towel and microwaved on a plate for about 3 minutes. Once cooked, the paper towel and the husk is removed. That picture above is how they look cooked with husks removed.
The tamales shown above are the chili and cheese type. The corn meal dough wrapping reminds me of a corn muffin. It has a bit of sweetness to it. Grant really enjoyed these, commenting that he really liked the outer wrapping. He is a big fan of chili and cheese and Mexican fare in general, including hot sauces and spices. He enjoyed the chili and cheese tamales just eating them plain, without adding a side of rice or even some hot sauce. He thought these were great all by themselves.
On another occasion, we tried the roasted vegetable tamales and these were a big hit too. I enjoyed this with a side a white rice. They are not very pretty in photos, but these tamales make up for it in flavor. I look forward to trying our last two flavors – spinach and feta cheese and sweet corn.
These are very convenient for eating on-the-go and delicious meal choice for vegetarians and those following a gluten-free diet.
