Now that the holidays are behind us, you may be itching to do some shopping for the stuff that you need to start the year off right. Although money may be tight after the holidays, there are shopping bargains in January to be had!
Back in August when I was complaining about the heat, I signed up for Consumer Reports, hoping to get some good tips on great quality products and bargain buys. As I was reading through the site one particular post caught my eye. They have a list that is broken down month by month to see when you can typically find the best prices on a variety of products. This list was put together by Consumer Reports’ product-research experts, who monitor prices.
Some sales may be tied to the intro. of new models and others are traditions, like the January white sale. So keep monitoring those e-mail, texts, tweets, and circulars announcing great sales, but also keep in mind that shopping by the calendar may just pay off too!
Products on Discount in January
According to Consumer reports, these are the items that you will find discounted in January. Keep in mind there are exceptions, and as always, keep your eye on texts, emails and Sunday circulars too.
- Bedding (sheets)
- Winter Clothing
Of these items, the only things I would possible be shopping for in January would be new sheets for our Queen size bed and winter clothing.
Shopping for Bed Sheets in January
The Consumer Reports recommended sheets are the Wamsutta 1,000 or Dreamzone (100 percent cotton Sateen or Twill Weave). The best deal I could find was at Bed Bath and Beyond where a full-sized set is on sale for $107. 99. The original price is $125. I wouldn’t call that a deep discount, so this must be one of those “exceptions.”
Rather than hold my breath for a Wamsutta Sale, I always look for the Best Buy option, and in this case Consumer Reports recommends the Fieldcrest Luxury Egyptian Cotton 600 TC sheets available at Target. These sheets are recommended as the Bargain Buy and are available at$67.99 for a Queen Set. This price is more in the ball park, but as far as sales go, this one is only a savings of 12%. However, I can save 5% and get free shipping by using my Red Card (It wasn’t compromised last month.) and another 10% because Target is actually having a white sale right now. I can save $10 when I spend $50 with promo code SALE10 and get this set of sheet for more like $55. The listed price in the CR Buying Guide is $70, so it’s a pretty good buy for a higher end sheet.
By the time January rolls around, stores are making room for the spring clothing and a large percentage of the winter stuff is already on sale. If you are a Kohl’s fan, you should check out the “Gold Star Clearance” racks, where prices are slashed up to 80 percent on weekend nights. According to Consumer Reports, every Wednesday, shoppers who are 60 years old and older get an extra 15 percent off at Khols. I did not know that! I will have to share that with my mother-in-law.
At Target, women’s clothing is generally marked down on Tuesdays, men’s on Wednesday, and kids’ on Mondays. Markdowns at Marshalls and T.J. Maxx usually happen on Wednesday.

Will you be shopping for any of these items in January?
More importantly, do you fold your fitted sheets like Martha?
