I have a drawer that is designated for sunscreens, fake tan products and bug sprays. As you can see, it is quite full. There is the Avon Sunscreen that we reviewed and is up for giveaway. If you would like to enter click here. Then, there is that bottle of Equate from like 10 years ago. I will never use that again, yet there it sits.
According to Consumer Reports ShopSmart Magazine, a sunscreen should be tossed after 2 years. I am ashamed to say that my bottle of Equate is probably at least four years old. Also, CR recommends that we write the date of purchase of the sunscreen right on the bottle, so we will know to toss it if it is older that 2 years.
With store shelves full of sunscreens, you may ask yourself, what is the best sunscreen? In the July 2013 issue of ShopSmart, the folks at Consumer Reports picked the best sunscreens that provided very good to excellent UVA and UVB protection. In the past, they recommended a minimum of SPF 30, but now say that “given this year’s test findings, go for a higher level of SPF to get the minimum level of protection, just in case.”
Consumer Reports ShopSmart Best Sunscreens for 2013
The top six picks do consist of two SPF 30 options, the other four are SPF 50 and all are labeled as “water resistant”. Here are the top six best sunscreens.
The Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50 is $11 for 8 ounces. This was a favorite because it is quickly rubbed in and doesn’t leave much residue. This is perfect for applying on squirming kids who can’t wait to get in that water!
Walgreens Continous Sport SPF 50 is $8 for 6 ounces. This is the only spray that leaves no residue.
Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch SPF 30 is $11 for 8 ounces. Testers claimed it left their skin feeling soft. The scent is a nice combo. of floral, tropical fruit and coconut. This stained less than the others.
Now that I have this information, I will most likely buy the Target Up & Up spray knowing that it is the cheapest of the sprays. The sprays are just too convenient. This Target spray was also the top pick of the six selected.
What sunscreens do you use? Do you have a drawer like mine that needs a cleanin’ out? 🙂
