I can’t remember the last time that I read a novel that was so good that I couldn’t put it down. Other books, I typically read a chapter or two and put the book down. With After Life, every night I lie in bed and I keep reading until I just about drop the book on my face, trying with all my might to keep my eyes open just to find out what happens next.
After Life Book Review
The story begins with the main character, Naomi, disposing of a body. That body was her boyfriend Peter. She buried the body, years pass and now some construction workers discover these unidentified bones. Naomi’s mother, a well established Medium, is retained to help solve the mystery. To protect herself, Naomi decides she is going to officially “assist” her mother in the investigation.
I am two thirds through the book and I still don’t know how Naomi’s boyfriend died. When it came to her profession he was skeptical, but otherwise they were falling in love. Was it an accident? Did Naomi become enraged over something? Who knows! Not only is this exciting to read, it is perfectly written. As much as I am dying to find out what happens next, I actually don’t want it to end!
About After Life
Naomi lives with her mother in Train Line, New York, a community of clairvoyants, aura-readers, and fortune-tellers. There she comes of age, finds work as a medium, and falls in love with a graduate student whose death will change her life forever. Bestselling author Ann Patchett calls After Life, “that rarest of wonders, a book that is both exquisitely written and a thrill to read.”
