I saw this Rossen report on the Today Show, ironically enough as I was on the Treadmill burning calories. It seems I may have to burn more than what the packaging tells me! This is bad news!
Did you know that companies are pretty much on the honor system and that they can be as much as 20% off on the calories they list per serving?
First the good news……..selections of Skinny Cow, Stonyfield Farms and Ben and Jerry’s were actually UNDER the calories listed. Yeah! (see video below.)
Now the bad news………..it was determined by EMSL (a top food) lab’s testing that Weight Watchers calorie counts were off – adding 13% and up to 16% more calories than indicated on the label. Et tu Weight Watchers? How are we supposed to lose weight when the labels are misleading – a bit counter intuitive to your program I think!
But here is the” coup de grace” as they say….Arctic Zero lists 150 calories for the whole pint. This number is off (as in the number on the label is too low in calories) by 46% in one case and a whopping 68% in another. Not sure I will be buying that ice cream treat anytime soon.
I am most disgusted with Weight Watchers, even though the FDA gives them a 20% lee-way, they should be right on the money with their numbers! Otherwise, I don’t typically buy any of these items on a regular basis. I just hope my precious Vita Brownies are only 100 calories!
So what do you think? Does this bother you?

i was so upset when i saw this air on TV!!! like, REALLY!!??
I love Ben and Jerrys. I dont like weight watchers anyways so it doesn’t really bother me. Thanks for posting!
I think that this is not right that the calories being reported are not true! Why does the calorie count off! I think because they do not want there consumers to really know the truth! What can we do though? How about not buy these products!
it did upset me!
Because I count calories as my method of losing weight, this ticks me off completely!
