If you are a Mom blogger, you probably have a button on your blog that other bloggers can freely grab and add to their own website. This is a very easy way to approach link building.
But not all links are created equal. Authority does count, meaning the higher the page rank of the website you link to the better. Also, some types of links are better than others and can mean the difference in how you achieve greater search engine placement and higher Google page rank. I recently read that text links with keywords are a better type of link than an image link with alt text (your blog button).
Take a look at your blog button’s html. Your blog button is an image link with alt text. For example this is the html for my blog button:
<a href=”http://www.momsownwords.com/”><img border=”0″ alt=”MomsOwnWords.com” src=”http://www.momsownwords.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/KristiMaloneyBlog125x125.jpg” /></a>
Image Links Rank Lower than Text Links
The alt text is MomsOwnWords.com. The alt text is just the name of my blog – Moms Own Words. This type of linking has no keywords for the search engine to list my blog under. While a link is a link, this is not the best way to build links because the search engine has to “trust” that my alt tag is correct. These image links with alt text links rank lower than text links with keywords in the text.
So what’s a mom blogger that wants to improve the quality of her links and build up her Google page rank do? Well, there may be a better way, as I am no expert, but in a pinch you can incorporate your key words into a text link and add it to your button’s html. For example, the key words that I would use are “Mom Blogger Freelance Writer Articles, Product Reviews and Giveaways.”
Here is my button’s code with the new text link containing key words. I highlighted the new html in blue.
<a href=”http://www.momsownwords.com/”><img border=”0″ alt=”MomsOwnWords.com” src=”http://www.momsownwords.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/KristiMaloneyBlog125x125.jpg” /></a><a href=”http://www.momsownwords.com”>Freelance Writer Mom Blogger Articles, Product Reviews and Giveaways</a>
You can check it out on my sidebar. The drawback is that you’re displaying your not so pretty text under your fabulous blog button – like I said, there may be a better way! Maybe we could all start using text links – not only do they take up less space than buttons but all those images take more time to load your pages! I know, what kind of blog would that be? BORING!
Do you currently incorporate text links with your site’s key words? Do tell!
