How to Make a Bowl Out of an Old Record Album

Have you ever seen this before? It’s a bowl made out of an “old” record album – kind of a quick little experiment to try with the kids if you have old albums lying around collecting dust. (In some cases, I’ve heard the album covers are more valuable than the records. So why not make a bowl or two? ;) )

According to my mother-in-law, this idea has been around for many years. That’s exactly where I discovered this at Gerene’s house yesterday when I was dropping off the kids. There it was sitting on her counter. “Wow, how did you do that?” I asked.

It was Gisele, my sister-in-law who was making these at her house with her teenage daughter Marie, which gave Gerene the idea to try it with the boys.

These would make funky chip bowls or even one of those trays to leave by the door to dump your keys, wallet etc…in.

How to Make a Bowl Out of an Old Record Album

  1. Preheat the oven to 220.
  2. Place the record on an oven-safe bowl or pan that has about a 7″ diameter and place that on top of a cookie sheet.
  3. Bake for 5 minutes or less. It’s done when you see the sides start to bend downward.

4. Next, take it out of the oven and form another 4 or 5 pleats between the ones that naturally formed from baking. I’m assuming it was just warm to the touch as she started to form the extra pleats.

And Volia -  a record bowl! (No more “Great Moments in Music” for this album!)

What have you done with your old record albums?

If you don’t know what a record album is, never mind!

How fun! I have an old record sitting on my shelf I could try that with!

Cool idea (even if part of my cringes as destorying a record). Whats crazy is my husband I are 30 and under, and we have two turntables in our house – that get used (every now and again).

It’s a great idea but I sold all of my old record albums at my garage sale last summer. Might have to garage-saling myself & find one so I can try this!

I love this idea! I’ll have to look for some albums at Goodwill – no way will I sacrifice any of my collection.

AHHHHH – this is soooooo awesome. I totally want to try it. How cool would that be at parties? I have all my old records hanging on a wall in my basement. Literally – I just put up a bunch of small nails and hung all my albums & they are covering an entire wall. It looks pretty awesome actually.

    That is cool!

Now I wish I had some albums left.

i’ve seen these for sale, do they make a chemically smell when they’re warming?

  11. 11

They didn’t make any smell when I made them. I was concerned about that too. I think it’s because the temp is so low and you only heat it enough to mold it.
It was such a fun activity, and a great trip down memory lane!

Wow, that seems easy enough to make. I don’t have any records laying around but am going to make one of those bowls next time I get my hands on some records.

How imaginativ! We’d got a lot of old records at home, but the kids play frisbee with them, and the records are lost.
