Reader’s Digest has recently published a set of four educational and entertaining kids books. These four hard cover books cover a wide range of scholastic topics like grammar, geography, math, science, and history. These “pocket” titles are written for ages 9-12 and aim to make learning fun and easy. I received these four titles for review: I Before E Except After C, Write (or is that Right?) Every Time, I Wish I Knew That, I Wish I Knew That Georgraphy. One Moms Own Words reader will win this same set of books!
Our Review
These books have already proven to be a valuable resource for my son James who is ten. He has really enjoyed browsing through them. In particular, he likes the I Before E Except After C Easy Cool Ways to Remember Facts Book. The book is filled with tricks (mnemonic devices) to help kids remember facts. He actually used the book to answer a homework question regarding the Great Lakes. The mnemonic device for the Great Lakes is HOMES: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. This book is chock full of cool ways to remember basic facts about the earth, mathematics, writing, clocks and calendars, history and music.
James was recently working on his Land forms Picture Dictionary, where he had to illustrate a series of land forms. He found information on rivers, volcanoes, and tundras in the I Wish I Knew That Geography Book.
The I Wish I Knew That Cool Stuff You Need to Know would make a fun reference book to ask the kids trivia questions. We could all use the guidelines for our writing (myself included) found in Write (or Is That Right?) Every Time – Cool Ways to Improve Your English.
The funny, black and white illustrations in each book remind me of the illustrations in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series that James loves. The books are well organized and easy to use as reference guides. The information is presented in bite size chunks – easy enough for a my ten year old to find information quickly. I know we will reference these books for years to come.
