Jennifer James post Five Ways to Improve Your Blog over at “Mom Blog Magazine” inspired this post. She asked the question, “What if you finally got enough likes on your Facebook page to get your own page URL, but your social media button reflects that really long URL that Facebook gave you at the beginning?”
Guess who finally had enough likes on their Facebook page to get their own vanity URL but didn’t even know it? Me! Not only that, but it seems I had enough likes on my Facebook page eons ago. I discovered that in September 2009 Facebook lowered the minimum fans needed for a customized fans page URL from 1000 to 25. Do you have 25 fans or more on your Facebook fans page? I am guessing that you do and it’s high time you got your own Facebook Fan Page URL!
Instead of all those numbers and nonsense after facebook.com/, you too can have a URL that looks like mine:
Every Mom Blogger that I know uses a Facebook fan page as a way to stay in touch with their readers, spread the word about their giveaways and announce their latest and greatest posts. Facebook is an amazing free online tool to do all of that and more. You can use your customized URL in your outgoing emails, your media kit, contact page, business cards and so forth.
Now, all a person needs to remember to find your fans page is the name of your blog and facebook.com. That’s it!
How to Get Your Own Facebook Fan Page URL
1. Log in to your Facebook account.
2. Go to your fans page.
3. While at your fans page paste this URL in your web browser’s navigation bar: http://www.facebook.com/username
Once you’ve entered this in your browser, the following words will appear: the username of your personal Facebook page and a link to set the user names of your other pages on Facebook. Click on the link to set the user names of your other pages on Facebook.
4. From the drop-down box, select the Facebook fans page that you would like to set the username for.
Assuming you have 25 fans or more, your Facebook fans page will appear on the list in the drop-down box.
5. Type in username that you want – mine was simply my blog name – MomsOwnWords.
These are the words that will directly follow the backslash after facebook.com/. Type them in exactly how you want them to appear in your customized Facebook URL. Usernames can only have letters, numbers, and periods.PLEASE!!!!!! Double-check your spelling. This change is permanent/ NOT! NOT! NOT! reversible.
6. Click on the link to check the availability of your proposed username.
Facebook will check to see if this username is already being used. If it isn’t, you may have it. If it is already taken, you can select another username or contact Facebook to report copyright infringement.
7. If your username is available, click on the confirmation link that sets the username.
This is a permanent change. Choose wisely! Your new Facebook fans page URL is active immediately.
Coincidentally, once I got my own Facebook Fan Page URL, my social media button on my blog was automatically updated! So the question should really be “Do you have your own Facebook Fan Page URL, yet?”
